Traditional Goju-Ryu Karate-do and Kobudo

At Boulder Kodokan, we study the traditional Okinawan Karate style known as Goju-Ryu. Trainings consist of warm-up exercises, the practice of basic techniques, kata (pre-determined fighting sequences performed alone), bunkai (pre-determined fighting sequences with a partner), and more. One of our club mottos is, "Train hard, train often", and that we do. But it's a great deal of fun in a very supportive, constructive atmosphere. We welcome anyone to come observe our training sessions. Classes are taught by Paul Gehring Sensei and Barbara Gehring Sensei, with 20 years of combined martial arts teaching experience.

We also study the martial art of Matayoshi Kobudo. One of the prominent weapons systems from Okinawa, Matayoshi Kobudo is a family system including over a dozen different weapons. We are the only dojo in the Rocky Mountain region to be officially affiliated with the Naha dojo in Okinawa. Beginner students start training with the bo (a six foot staff as seen to the right), then move on to sai (short metal sword-like weapons), then tonfa (a pair of wooden handles, much like today's billie-clubs used by police), and finally nunchuku (remember "Enter the Dragon"?) while training for black belt.

Family Class

Boulder Kodokan also has a Youth Program. It's the same Goju-Ryu, taught in a manner oriented to the younger student. And parents are always welcome to join their kids. The class schedule is Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:45 to 6:45pm. Please follow the "Youth Classes" link to the left for more information.
